The newly built airport in Ayodhya will be called ‘Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham’. The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal to rename the Ayodhya Airport, and declare it as an International Airport. PM Modi inaugurated the airport on December 30, 2023.
The new airport has been constructed in a record time ahead of the inauguration of the Grand Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024. Elevating Ayodhya Airport to international status is paramount for realizing Ayodhya’s economic potential and its significance as a global pilgrimage site, opening doors to foreign pilgrims and tourists.

The airport’s name, “Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham,” pays homage to Maharishi Valmiki, the sage attributed to composing the epic Ramayana, adding a cultural touch to the airport’s identity. The first phase of the much awaited airport recently concluded, allowing airlines to start operations. The first phase of the new Ayodhya Airport has been at a cost of over Rs 1,450 crore. The airport’s terminal building is 6500 square metres in size and is prepared to handle roughly 10 lakh passengers a year.
The airport terminal building’s front has a representation of the architecture of the Ram temple. The interiors are adorned with murals, paintings, and artwork that portrays the life of Lord Ram. Numerous sustainable features, including an insulated roofing system, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, fountain-filled landscaping, sewage and water treatment plants, solar power plants, and many more, are also present in the Ayodhya airport terminal building.
Flights To Ayodhya Airport
Airlines like IndiGo and Air India Express have already started direct flights to the city in Uttar Pradesh. IndiGo will connect Ayodhya Airport with the Delhi International airport from January 15, 2024. The inaugural flight flew on December 30, 2024 with chants of Jai Shri Ram inside the plane.
