Tata Nexon Is The Best Selling Car Of India, Beats Affordable Maruti Suzuki Hatchbacks

Tata Motors, the Indian automaker, is rapidly becoming the most preferred automaker in the country, and is currently the third largest carmaker behind Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. The growing sales of Tata Motors can be attributed to the recent launches of affordable SUVs in India. Both Tata Punch and Tata Nexon have been pushing the sales chart for the automaker.

In December 2023, Tata Nexon became the best selling car of India, and not just the best selling SUV, which it has been achieving for some time now. In fact, Tata Nexon claimed this numero uno spot, outpacing affordable Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks, which have been ruling the charts for decades now.

On the other hand, the Tata Punch came at the third spot, ahead of hatchbacks. With 2 cars in top 3 spot, Tata Motors has solidified its presence in the Indian market. Here’s a look at the top 10 selling cars in India in December 2023.

2) Maruti Suzuki Dzire: 13,787 units
3) Tata Punch: 12,844 units
4) Mahindra Scorpio: 11,355 units
5) Hyundai Venue: 10,383 units
6) Kia Seltos: 9,957 units
7) Maruti Suzuki Fronx: 9,692 units
8) Hyundai Creta: 9,243 units
9) Mahindra Bolero: 7,995 units

As seen in the sales chart, 8 of the top 10 cars were SUVs, 1 was sedan and 2 were hatchbacks, revealing the nature of SUV frenzy nation. Further, Maruti Suzuki has lost a lot of spots in the list, with Swift, Baleno not being in the top 10 spot after a long time.

As for Tata Motors, not just the Tata Nexon and Punch, Tata has been ruling electric car market in India. During the past year, the automaker saw a 59 percent increase in EV sales. Tata Motors retails Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and Nexon EV in India and will soon launch Tata Punch.ev in India.

Tata.ev sales touched 69,153 units in 2023, contributing to 12.55 percent of the company’s overall passenger vehicle sales that stood at 5,50,883 units in 2023.
