The Indian market has fast adopted SUVs as the most preferred body type in India, with SUVs, small and large, outpacing sedans and now hatchbacks. In fact, the best selling car in India is now an SUV- Tata Nexon – which is a compact SUV. This flavour of SUVs has now reached electric vehicles in India, with EV owners preferring electric SUVs over smaller cars. This is the reason automakers are more inclined towards launching EVs in SUV body shape.

The competition in the electric SUV market has been fierce recently, and it will only grow more so as time goes on. Recently Tata Motors launched its second electric SUV in India, the Tata Punch.ev, while Mahindra updated its XUV400. Similarly, all the major brands are eyeing to enter this emerging market. Here’s a list of the top 7 EVs that will be released this year are listed below:
1. Maruti Suzuki eVX
The Maruti Suzuki eVX made its public debut at the 2023 Auto Expo, as the first electric car from the India’s largest carmaker. It is anticipated that the compact electric SUV will have two battery types, FWD/AWD setups, and a stated range of more than 500 kilometres. The name of the Maruti Suzuki eVX is not yet finalized.
2. Tata Curvv EV
Like the Maruti Suzuki eVX, Tata Motors, the homegrown automaker showcased the Tata Curvv electric SUV at the Auto Expo. In the upcoming months, Tata Motors intends to introduce the Curvv EV after the launch of the Tata Punch.ev. The SUV will be based on the Acti.ev platform, that will host this Tata model as its second iteration.
3. Kia EV9
Kia EV9 is the flagship electric SUV from the South Korean automaker and made its debut at the Auto Expo 2023. The WLTP-certified 541 km range of Kia’s EV9 marked the vehicle’s debut internationally last year. It will be positioned as the brand’s flagship product and go on sale by the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025, sitting above the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

4. Mahindra XUV.e8
After launched the revamped Mahindra XUV400 electric SUV, which features significant interior modifications, the Indian automaker is now planning to launch the Mahindra XUV.e8 in India. The electric SUV is based on the successful XUV700 SUV and will run on the INGLO platform. The INGLO is the dedicated EV platform from the automaker that will feature 5 features, including 3 cars from the Mahindra BE.EV range.
5. Enyaq iV from Skoda
This year, Skoda and VW will introduce their first electric vehicles in India with the debut of the Enyaq iV and ID.4, which will share a same platform and be imported through the CBU channel. The Skoda Enyaq iV is the flagship SUV from the Czech automaker and can be priced north of Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom).
6. Hyundai Creta Electric
The highly successful Hyundai Creta mid-size SUV recenty received a major update in India. Now, it is anticipated that the electric Hyundai Creta would go on sale before the end of 2024 and use LG Chem batteries. It will be different from the recently facelifted IC-engined Creta in terms of appearance, and the electric motor powering the front wheels might be the same one as the entry-level model.
7. Tata Harrier EV
Last on our list is another Tata Motors electric SUV, the Tata Harrier EV. As the name suggests, the upcoming SUV will be based on the Harrier mid-size SUV and will join the Tata Nexon.ev, Tata Punch.ev, and upcoming Tata Curvv.ev to become the 4th electric SUV in the portfolio of the Indian automaker. Both the Curvv and Harrier EVs will have a range of more than 500 kilometres when it arrives later this year.
