Maldives, an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, is one of the most sought-after destinations for travellers worldwide. Despite attracting a lot of Indian travellers, the island nation is in a diplomatic battle with India. The chaos erupted after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep, one of the India’s only two Island Union Terrorities.

During his visit, he promoted tourism in Lakshadweep, which is situated in the Arabian Sea, some 300 km away from Kochi, Kerala. Some social media users claimed it as a masterstroke by PM Modi to promote tourism in India, and dragged Maldives in the conversation.
Three high ranking govt representatives of the Maldavian government engaged in the conversation by demeaning Lakshadweep, India and PM Modi. This caused an uproar on X.com, with #BoycottMaldives trending. Despite this trend, Maldives still remains one of the most preferred regions for travellers.

From India, almost 60 flights operate weakly, and the return airfare starts as low as Rs 15,000 for single traveller.

Although flights to Maldives have always been cheaper, the flow of Indian Tourists peaked in the last 5 years due to the influence of social media. Influencers and celebrities can often be seen sharing their captivating experiences on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This has fuelled a desire among Indian travelers to visit the Maldives.
