A Volvo C40 Recharge electric SUV sold in India recently caught fire while cruising on a highway in Chhattisgarh. Reportedly no one was injured in the incident as the occupants got out of the burning vehicle. The incident was caught on camera, showing the electric car bursting into flames. It is to be noted this is one of the luxury electric SUVs sold in the Indian market and is sold at a starting price of Rs 62.95 lakh (ex-showroom).

The video shared on social media shows the SUV standing on the side of the road. Meanwhile, the flames can be seen coming out of the lower side of the vehicle, indicating a possibility of fire in the battery pack of the EV. However, the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. The details of the incident will be revealed after an investigation.
It is to be noted that the Swedish brand is well-known for the safety of its vehicles. The Volvo C40 Recharge was introduced in India in the middle of 2023, and it shares its underpinnings with the XC40 Recharge EV. It employs the CMA platform (Compact Modular Architecture) and has two electric motors – one on each axle.

Additionally, it has a 78kWh battery pack, and it can travel 530 km on a single charge on the WLTP cycle. The car has an all-wheel drive, and it comes equipped with two electric motors that generate a combined power output of 408hp and a peak torque of 660Nm.
Volvo claims that it can go from 0 to 100kph in just 4.7 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than the XC40 Recharge. Furthermore, the C40 Recharge is designed to charge quickly with a 150kW DC charger, allowing it to charge from 0 to 100 percent in just 27 minutes.
Volvo Car India has now given an official statement on the C40 Recharge incident:
“We are aware of an incident on Saturday involving a fire on a C40 while being driven. The embedded safety features informed the driver to take the car aside and step out of the car. There were no injuries & all occupants were safe.
Our Customer Care call center was online to guide the customer on requisite safety measures. At Volvo Cars we pride ourselves on the safety of our cars and have taken this incident very seriously. The said vehicle will be minutely examined by our technical experts to ascertain the cause. We are in touch with and continue to support the customer.”
