F4 title battle heads to Chennai

The F4 Indian Championship title race moves to the Madras International Circuit (MIC) in Chennai on October 22–23, as the Indian Racing Festival (IRF) 2026 stages its third round. The weekend will also mark the opening round of the 2026 Indian Racing League (IRL), with six city-based teams beginning their championship campaigns.

Kichcha’s Kings Bengaluru driver Aris Kyriakou leads the F4 standings with 93 points, but Goa Aces JA Racing’s Luviwe Sambudla is only five points behind on 88. The narrow gap leaves little room for error as the championship enters another important phase.

The previous season’s racing at MIC produced close competition. Sachel Rotgé won three races at the circuit in 2025, while Chennai Turbo Riders driver Shane Chandaria secured one victory. Their results underline the potential for the Chennai round to influence the F4 title contest.

Sambudla arrives in Chennai after a strong Round 2 at Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. He won Race 1 from pole position, retired from Race 2 and returned to the top step of the podium in Race 3. Kyriakou maintained his lead with podium finishes across all three races.

With 25 points available for a race win, the five-point difference between the two drivers could change quickly. Hyderabad Blackbirds’ Bhuvan Bonu is third in the standings with 51 points after winning Race 2 in Coimbatore from reverse-grid pole position. Mahlori Mabunda has 46 points, while Aaron Mehta is fifth with 42 points.

Ntiyiso Mabunda also enters the round with momentum after taking two podium finishes in Round 2. Swarnav Das and Chennai Turbo Riders’ Sai Aditya will also be looking to move up the order. Aditya started 10th on the grid in Coimbatore and finished strongly in Race 3.

Defending IRL champions return

The Indian Racing League will begin its 2026 season with six city-based franchise teams competing in India’s only four-wheel racing league and the world’s first gender-neutral racing championship series. Goa Aces JA Racing will start as the defending champions after winning the 2025–26 IRL title.

The team will be led by Raoul Hyman and Fabienne Wohlwend. Hyman was a key contributor to the team’s previous success, while Wohlwend won the feature race at the Goa Street Circuit in February 2026.

Chennai Turbo Riders will race on home soil. The other teams are Kichcha’s Kings Bengaluru, Hyderabad Blackbirds, Kolkata Royal Tigers and Speed Demons Delhi. The 24-driver line-up includes Indian and international competitors, with women racers included in every team’s line-up.

The opening-round field includes Jon Lancaster and Mia Caruso for Hyderabad Blackbirds, Shane Chandaria and Neus Llin Cruz for Chennai Turbo Riders, and Sachel Rotgé and Mira Erda for Speed Demons Delhi. Kichcha’s Kings Bengaluru will feature Emil Heyerdahl and Jemma Moore, while Goa Aces JA Racing includes its team leaders Hyman and Wohlwend. Kolkata Royal Tigers’ line-up includes Alister Yoong and Jem Hepworth.

IRF combines league racing and driver development

The IRL is FMSCI-approved and runs alongside the FIA-certified F4 Indian Championship at MIC on October 22–23, 2026. The combined weekend brings together the city-based team competition and a single-seater championship focused on emerging drivers.

The F4 Indian Championship serves as a pathway from karting to single-seater racing. It gives Indian and international racers the opportunity to compete in India, gain race experience and earn Super Licence points as they progress in their careers.
