The limited-edition Ducati Formula 73 pays tribute to the iconic 750 Super Sport Desmo, with only 873 numbered units produced globally.
Ducati has introduced the exclusive Formula 73 motorcycle in India, celebrating the Italian manufacturer’s heritage with a modern interpretation of one of its most iconic models. Inspired by the 1973 Ducati 750 Super Sport Desmo, the Formula 73 combines classic café racer styling with contemporary technology and performance.
Priced at Rs 20 lakh, ex-showroom, India, the motorcycle will be produced in a globally limited series of 873 numbered units. Ducati’s exclusive allocation for the Indian market has already sold out, and the company is no longer accepting new bookings.
Ducati Formula 73 Celebrates a Racing Legacy
The Formula 73 pays homage to the 750 Super Sport Desmo, the first Ducati road motorcycle equipped with a desmodromic valve timing system. Its heritage traces back to the 1972 200 Miglia di Imola, where Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari secured a landmark victory aboard the 750 Imola Desmo.
That achievement became a defining moment in Ducati’s production-derived racing history and helped lay the foundations for the brand’s long-standing motorsport legacy. The Formula 73 revisits this era through a motorcycle that blends historical design cues with modern engineering.
Each unit features the model name and serial number on its steering plate, along with a certificate of authenticity. Owners also receive a collection of period images and sketches from the Ducati Style Centre, presented in a special box.
Classic Café Racer Styling With Distinctive Details
The Formula 73 features a slim silhouette and minimalist design inspired by the original 750 Super Sport Desmo. Its silver and aqua green paint scheme has been developed using references from Ducati’s historical archives.
A vertical gold stripe on the fuel tank recalls the original unpainted strip on the 750 Imola Desmo, which allowed racing teams to monitor fuel levels. Clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, and a short, tapered fairing and tail reinforce its café racer character.
The motorcycle also features several billet aluminium components, including the brake and clutch levers with oil reservoirs, footpegs and a standard-fit Rizoma fuel cap. These details contribute to its premium positioning as a collectible motorcycle.
803cc Engine Produces 73hp
Powering the Ducati Formula 73 is an 803cc Desmodue L-twin engine featuring desmodromic valve actuation and two valves per cylinder. The Euro 5+-approved engine produces 73hp at 8,250rpm and 65.2Nm of torque at 7,000rpm.
A Termignoni silencer, developed specifically for the motorcycle, complements its mechanical character, while the ride-by-wire throttle is designed to deliver smooth and progressive engine response.
The engine is housed in a steel trellis frame finished in aqua green. Suspension duties are handled by a 41mm upside-down KYB front fork and a preload-adjustable KYB rear shock. The motorcycle rides on 17-inch spoked wheels fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres measuring 120/70 at the front and 180/55 at the rear.
Braking is handled by a 330mm front disc with a four-piston Brembo radial calliper. The Formula 73 has a wet weight of 183kg without fuel.
Modern Electronics and Riding Features
Despite its retro-inspired appearance, the Formula 73 receives a comprehensive electronics package. Features include cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Quick Shift and selectable Sport and Road riding modes.
A full-colour 4.3-inch TFT dashboard and full-LED lighting with daytime running lights and self-cancelling turn indicators are also part of the standard equipment. Optional accessories include an anti-theft system, Ducati Multimedia System, heated grips and turn-by-turn navigation.
With its limited global production, heritage-focused styling and modern mechanical package, the Ducati Formula 73 brings a distinctive collector-oriented offering to India. However, with the Indian allocation already sold out, the motorcycle is no longer available for fresh bookings.
