Eicher celebrates Drivers’ Day with healthcare and vision-care services for more than 1,000 commercial vehicle drivers across India
Eicher Trucks and Buses has marked 10 years of its Eicher Driver Care Programme, an initiative aimed at improving access to healthcare and vision care for India’s commercial vehicle driver community. The milestone was celebrated on Drivers’ Day, with healthcare services planned for more than 1,000 drivers across the country.
Launched in 2016 in partnership with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH), the Eicher Driver Care Programme has evolved into a nationwide initiative focused on preventive healthcare and vision care. Over the past decade, the programme has conducted more than 17,000 eye camps, facilitated over 8 lakh eye screenings and distributed close to 1 lakh spectacles.
Eicher says the programme is part of its broader effort to place drivers at the centre of India’s commercial transportation ecosystem. Better access to preventive healthcare and vision care is aimed at helping drivers perform their duties safely and effectively while also contributing to road safety and logistics efficiency.
Mobile eye-care services reach transport hubs
The programme has expanded considerably from its initial focus on eye care and now operates through 13 Mobile Eye Vans and one static centre at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Delhi.
The mobile vans currently operate across major transportation hubs in Delhi NCR, Kanpur, Jaipur, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna, Sambalpur, Guwahati, Pune, Salem, Nashik and Hyderabad.
The mobile facilities are designed to take essential eye-care services closer to commercial vehicle drivers, who often spend extended periods on the road and may have limited access to regular healthcare facilities.
B. Srinivas, MD & CEO, VE Commercial Vehicles, said drivers play an indispensable role in keeping businesses, communities and the economy moving. He added that the company’s partnership with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital has helped bring essential healthcare and vision services closer to drivers across India.
Eicher Jagruk Bharat expands social security support
Alongside healthcare initiatives, Eicher is also working to strengthen social security access for drivers through Eicher Jagruk Bharat.
The nationwide initiative helps drivers and their families identify and access social security schemes they may be eligible for. The programme uses a WhatsApp chatbot service through which drivers can connect with the Jagruk Bharat team by giving a missed call or sending “Hi” to 9318350660.
The service is intended to help drivers navigate relevant government social security schemes and extend assistance to their family members as well.
As the Eicher Driver Care Programme completes a decade, the company says its focus remains on supporting the well-being of India’s commercial vehicle drivers while contributing to safer roads and a stronger commercial transportation ecosystem.
